When do I take the California State Notary Exam?
Within 24 hours of ordering the Home Study Notary Course online, Abacus will send you the study materials via Priority Mail. Upon receipt, you must spend at least six hours reviewing the materials. After reviewing the materials, sign the enclosed Declaration and return it to Abacus in the envelop provided. You may also FAX us a copy of the Declaration to expedite processing. Within 24 hours of receiving the Declaration, Abacus will fax and mail you a copy of your Proof of Completion. You are now ready to take the California State Notary Exam.
Where do I take the California State Notary Exam?
Check the CPS Notary Exam Schedule and follow the instructions to register for the Exam online. Visit https://notary.cps.ca.gov/sessions.asp for Notary Exam schedule/registration information.
What is required to pass the California Notary Exam?
The California Notary Public Exam is comprised of 30 multiple choice questions which you have 50 minutes to complete. You must answer 21 questions correctly to pass (70%). You must take a check for $40 made payable to “Secretary of State”, a Proof of Completion provided by Abacus and a Notary Application also provided by Abacus.
What do I do after passing the exam?
After passing the exam, you need to have a “Live Scan” taken of your fingerprints for a background check. Fingerprints are not required for notaries with less than a six-month break in service. A live scan form with instructions will be included with your pass letter.
What is the background check looking for?
The background check is looking for felony and misdemeanor convictions. Applicants must also be in compliance with all child and family support orders. Visit http://www.ss.ca.gov/business/notary/notary_qualifications_revised.htm for a list of disqualifying convictions or call the Secretary of State’s office (916) 653-3595.
What happens after passing my background check?
After passing the exam and background check, you will receive your Commission from the Secretary of State. Within 30 days of receipt of your Commission, you must secure a $15,000 Bond and order a personalized Notary Seal.
Where do I post the $15,000 Notary Public bond?
Every California Notary Public is required by state law to post a $15,000 bond with the County Clerk of his/her principal place of business. The premium (cost) for such a bond is about $30 for 4 years.
When do I get sworn in as a California Notary Public?
Within 30 days of receipt of your Commission, you must get sworn in at the County Clerk’s office where you reside or work. Take your Commission Letter from the Secretary of State and evidence of your Bond. Generally, it takes 2-3 months to get sworn in as a California Notary Public, from the date you take the notary test.
